Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course Detail

​The ASHI Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) program is a scenario (case-based) continuing education course intended for trained and skilled healthcare providers who either direct or participate in cardiopulmonary and resuscitation emergencies in children. Based on the official test of the program, PALS Study Guide, 4th Edition by Barbara J. Aehlert RN BSPA, PALS provides students with an opportunity to enhance and refine their knowledge and hands-on skill proficiency in emergency cardiovascular care. This pediatric advanced life support training program conforms to the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.

Prerequisites

All individuals who participate in a PALS class must be previously trained, skilled and be able to:

  • Perform high-quality pediatric basic life support (PBLS)

  • Read and interpret basic electrocardiograms (ECG)

  • Understand basic resuscitation pharmacology, prepare and administer essential medications.

Max student to instructor ratio: 10 to 1

Important Considerations

Recognized certification period: Up to 2 years

Recommended time to complete:

  • Initial training 4-5 hours

  • Renewal training: less that initial instructional time

  • Successful completion is based on achievement of the core learning objectives rather than a prescribed instruction time.

Successfully complete five performance evaluations, three PBLS and two PALS

  • High-quality infant BLS

  • High-quality child BLS

  • Bag mask ventilation

  • Respiratory or shock case management

  • Cardiac case management

Continuing Education

Continuing Education hours through the EMS Training Institute of NEPA, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services
